How to get the most out of your stall

You can be as creative as you like with your stall, it's a blank canvas for you to show off your artistic flare, or just generate as much cash as you can. We've put together a few tips that will help you prepare for your stall at The Brighton Baby Bazaar.

Things to bring with you

  • A cash float - we advise you break £20 into a £10 note, a £5 note, 4 £1 coins and 2 50p coins. But however you would like to do it is up to you!

  • Something to hold your cash in - bum bag or money box (just makes things easier)

  • A pen and notepad - to keep track of sales or prices

  • Bags - if you have spare plastic bags, they would be helpful for customers who buy a lot from you

  • Table decorations - the more attractive the table, the more customers you'll get!

  • Card machine - if you have one

  • Your children - if you have kids, you're welcome to bring them with you!

What's already there

  • Table - at the Cornerstone Community Centre the tables are 120cm x 75cm

  • Chairs - you won't be expected to stand up for the whole time, don't worry

  • Tea, coffee and biscuits - we aim to make our stall holders at least one hot drink, but if it's busy you're welcome to make your own. Everything will be in the kitchen, you can help yourself

10 top tips

  • Make your stall look attractive - some stall holders bring a colourful table cloth to attract customers to their stall

  • Visual merchandising - your stall is effectively your shop for a couple of hours. Make sure all your items are visible and displayed in categories, eg. sized clothes, toys, summer wear, winter wear, etc.

  • Label everything - make sure prices are clear to your customers. Either using stickers or price tags. We have some stickers and pens at The Baby Bazaar if you need to do this during set-up

  • For craft sellers, make a price board or price sheet - also add your social media, etsy or website on there so customers can also buy from you after the event

  • For preloved sellers - lower priced items typically sell quicker. Separate lower priced and higher priced items so customers have a clear choice to fit with their budget. For help with pricing, take a look at apps like Vinted for inspiration

  • Clothing rails - if you have one, bring it! There will be room. It makes it easier for customers to browse any clothes you're selling

  • Consider doing bundles - everyone loves a BOGOF or 3 for £5 situation

  • Think about how you can take card payments - we advise customers to bring cash, but not everyone does. Stall holders who take card payments generally sell around 30% more than those who don't. PayPal is a good option, or if you can see yourself being a regular seller, it's definitely worth investing in a Square Card Reader or SumUp machine

  • Take card payments with Collctiv.com app - download the app and it allows you to share payment links and QR codes with customers so that they can pay using their card. They will need to put their card details into their own phone to pay you, so allow a few minutes for this. You have the option to withdraw the money into your personal account, which takes 2-3 days to clear

  • If you're prepared to haggle, let your customer know - you obviously don't have to budge on your prices if you don't want to, but if you're up for a barter, go for it!

  • We're here to help you - some people may be completely comfortable or experienced in selling at events like this, others not so much. Just remember, we have your back. Whether you're putting yourself out there with your craft or letting go of beloved clothes and toys that your children enjoyed, The Baby Bazaar is a safe and supportive space for all
